Blackberryhas announced that it will add support for Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean apps in an upcoming software update slated for release later this year.
At the unveiling of its Blackberry 10operating system the firm was keen to talk up the fact that its software comes with support for Android applications. However, what it didn't dwell on was that Blackberry 10 OS can only support Android 2.3 Gingerbread apps, some of which are now three years old.
That's about to change soon, though, as the firm announced that a Blackberry 10.2 software update will deliver support for apps designed for Google's Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system.
On its developer blog, Blackberry said, "Do you like Candy? How about a big bowl of Jelly Beans? Well, I'm happy to satisfy your sweet tooth with the Beta release of the Blackberry Runtime for Android Apps and Plug-in for Android Development Tools for Blackberry 10.2.
"If you didn't get the hint, this release includes the first beta release of Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean). All the great features that were previously available in Gingerbread will continue to be supported, as well as some specific Jelly Bean OS features such as Fragments, embedded fragments, animation framework and hardware acceleration."
Blackberry had previously announced that 10.2 OS will also include features such as emojis, multiple alarms and reminder timers, all of which will be coming to theBlackberry Z10, Q10 and Q5 smartphones. Exciting stuff.
A beta release of the new Blackberry runtime for Android apps and a plug-in for Android development tools were made available to developers, but the software isn't expected to see a full release until sometime later this year. We've contacted Blackberry for more information.
