Nokia shipped 7.4 million Lumia smartphones last quarter

Nokia missed analysts forecasts for sales of its handsets in the second quarter as the company struggles to recapture market share it has lost to rivals Samsung and Apple.
Nokia said it shipped 7.4 million Lumia smartphones in the quarter, up 32 percent from the first quarter but fewer than the 8.1 million units analysts had anticipated in a Reuters poll.
That shows Chief Executive Stephen Elop, hired in 2010 to turn the company around, has yet to prove his bold choice in 2011 to adopt Microsoft Corp's untested Windows Phone software was the right one.
Sales of regular mobile phones, which still account for over half of its device revenues, were also weaker than expected. Shipments of such handsets fell to 53.7 million units, far lower than the market's average forecast for 56.2 million.
That showed customers are switching to rival handsets and upgrading to smartphones more quickly than expected.
Nokia has been cutting costs and selling off assets to buy time for a turnaround. Its net cash reserves fell to 4.1 billion euros from 4.5 billion euros in the previous quarter, in line with expectations.

Nokia seems to be gearing up to launch its new flagship device, the Nokia Lumia 1020 which features a 41-megapixel camera in India, soon.

The new Lumia 1020 has been listed on Nokia's official site with a 'coming soon' tag and this makes us hopeful that it will hit the Indian stores shortly. The Finnish handset maker launched the Lumia 1020 last week in New York.
However, the company did not offer any information related to the launch or pricing of the device for markets such as India.
The latest flagship model from Nokia comes equipped with a 4.5-inch display which is almost the same size as the one on the Lumia 920 and Lumia 925. The display boasts of a pixel density of 332 PPI. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor with 2GB of RAM and runs Windows Phone 8. It features a 41-megapixel PureView camera sensor which offers Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), backside-illuminated image sensor, 6 lens optics along with a Xenon Flash. Nokia has also added some camera software including the Nokia Pro Camera app and Smart Camera Mode. It also offers a 1.2-megapixel front facing camera. The phone comes with 32GB internal storage which is non-expandable. The new Lumia 1020 comes in three colour variants- Yellow, White and Black, as per the official site.
Nokia's Lumia range of smartphones, specially the high-end ones, have not been a major hit in the Indian market and the company is struggling to get back its share in the smartphone segment with its new Lumia phones.
The Lumia 1020 is not the first PureView phone from Nokia. The company had launched the 808 PureView phone last year, that featured a 41-megapixel snapper and created a lot of buzz. Next in the list was Lumia 920 with PureView technology that focused on low-light imaging.

Nokia Lumia 1020 in yellow white and black
FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia has failed to keep the Lumia 1020 under wraps, with the smartphone having been leaked in full ahead of its unveiling in New York on Thursday.
Wpcentral has managed to get its mitts on a press image of the Nokia Lumia 1020 showing off the handset's 41MP rear-facing camera and three different colour variations of the Finnish phone firm's upcoming Windows Phone flagship. It's much more detailed than last week's leak, where we merely caught a glimpse of the handset's rumoured 4.5in AMOLED screen.
As well as revealing that the handset will be available in black, white and yellow, the image shows that the camera adds a fair bit of bulk to the rear of the Lumia 1020, although the handset looks much slimmer than the Pureview 808. This camera, as well as boasting a 41MP Carl Zeiss sensor, comes with both a Xenon and LED flash, and Wpcentral claims that there's also optical image stablisation along with the option to take 32MP and 5MP images at the same time.
The leak also revealed that the Nokia Lumia 1020 will be the first Windows Phone 8 device to feature 2GB of RAM. There's also talk that the phone will feature 32GB of non-expandable storage, a built-in FM radio, NFC and an optional wireless charging backplate.
There's also the first hint of a release date for the device, with Wpcentral claiming the Lumia 1020 will show up at AT&T later this month. There's no word on UK availability, although it is likely to be released over here.
The Nokia Lumia 1020 will be unveiled in New York on Thursday, and The INQUIRER will be live from the event to bring you all the latest details
